Primary 5 is the first year of subject-based banding: your child now takes maths at Standard or Foundation level, and the school reviews that level again at the end of the year (MOE). It is also the year many parents first notice a gap between homework marks and test marks.
Why P5 maths feels harder
The PSLE paper tests reasoning, not just recall: SEAB's third assessment objective is to "reason mathematically, analyse information and make inferences; select appropriate strategies to solve problems" (SEAB). Primary 5 is where school tests start asking for that. A child who did well on straightforward questions until P4 can suddenly meet a word problem with no obvious first step.
What lessons focus on in Primary 5
- Choosing the first step in a multi-step word problem
- Drawing the problem before solving it
- Checking answers against the question, a habit that saves marks in a timed paper
- Building towards the PSLE format: short answers worth 2 marks, long answers worth 3 to 5 (SEAB)
What it costs
Published hourly rates for primary home tuition in 2026 run from about S$25 to S$40 with a part-time tutor, S$35 to S$60 with a full-time tutor and S$55 to S$90 with a current or former school teacher (FamilyTutor, SmileTutor, TutorCity). We confirm the rate for your child's level before the first lesson.
What a lesson looks like
- Weekly work on the current school topic
- One hard word problem per lesson, solved and then explained back
- Timed practice in the PSLE question formats
- A short progress note after each lesson
