Primary 4 is the last year before subject-based banding. Your child's Primary 4 school exams decide the subject combination the school recommends for Primary 5 (MOE), so a weak P4 maths result can change which maths paper they sit at PSLE.
What MOE's banding rules say
From MOE's subject-based banding rules (MOE):
- A child who passes three or more subjects at Primary 4 is offered the four Standard subjects: English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics and Science.
- A child who passes two subjects or fewer is offered a choice from four Standard subjects down to four Foundation subjects.
- Parents indicate their preferred combination on an option form, and the school can adjust levels at the end of Primary 5.
MOE's position is that taking a subject at Foundation level is not a disadvantage. But for a child close to the line, P4 is when an extra hour a week changes the choice.
What lessons focus on in Primary 4
- The gaps the school's P3 and P4 tests show, worked on one at a time
- Multi-step word problems, the step most P4 children have not met before
- Writing the method down in a way that earns method marks, a habit the PSLE paper rewards (SEAB)
- Mental calculation, so Paper 1 without a calculator is not a race against the clock
What it costs
Published hourly rates for primary home tuition in 2026 run from about S$25 to S$40 with a part-time tutor, S$35 to S$60 with a full-time tutor and S$55 to S$90 with a current or former school teacher (FamilyTutor, SmileTutor, TutorCity). We confirm the rate for your child's level before the first lesson.
What a lesson looks like
- A first lesson spent finding the gaps in your child's recent tests
- One topic secured before moving to the next
- Word problems drawn out, step by step
- Progress shared with you after every lesson
